Presentation Overview

Have you ever needed a water datasets that will indicate the high tide levels along a riverbank but found that searching for this data returns over 1000 different dataset results? How about simply wanting to find how much land tax you pay on a potential new land purchase that results in being presented with a map viewer and lots of layers to turn on and off?

While the spatial community may find these sorts of questions easy to identify, for new industries whom are taking a bigger step into spatial, the knowledge and expertise needed is not readily on hand to assist with these questions. Technology, Retail and Information sectors are rapidly moving towards a ‘Pull’ approach in the supply chain where the user is in control of receiving relevant information related to their purpose.

The CRC for Spatial Information has invested heavily into determining where and how the sematic web can improve spatial information capture, management, delivery and access along the entire supply chain. Sematic technologies is not a new area although its application into spatial will disrupt how traditional spatial information is viewed from a supplier and a consumer view. In essence it allows relationships to be formed between different data elements in a way that enables natural language querying to occur. Take this a step further and machine to machine processing of data on the fly with limited to no human input is possible.

This presentation will introduce how semantic technologies will enable the consumer to be in more control of how information is discovered and information is derived and how the spatial industry will be required to change and adopt the mechanics to enable this area.
